2 〔存在などが目立たなくなる〕 become unassuming [unostentatious, unobtrusive, inconspicuous].

●くすんだ存在 an unassuming [unostentatious] presence [person]; a person who does not stand out.

●あの人たちの中に入ると彼はくすんでしまう. When he joins their group he becomes inconspicuous [lost in the crowd].

・この中では彼の作品はくすんで見える. His work looks lackluster in the midst of these other ones.
